Crackerbarrel

Crackerbarrel (every Sunday) is UCE’s long-running Sunday morning discussion forum. Meeting in Room 3 for the hour preceding the eleven o’clock church service, the group focuses on topics introduced by one or more presenters who then open the discussion to other forum participants. The topics and approaches to their exploration are as varied as the interests and backgrounds of those who attend. Crackerbarrel attempts to be a manifestation of that portion of the UCE covenant that calls upon us to “seek the truth, in love,” which we interpret as civility.

A long tradition at the Unitarian Church of Evanston, Crackerbarrel is a lay-organized-and-led discussion. Topics for discussion vary considerably, from public policy to ethics to personal theologies, and are typically announced in advance. A layperson holds the position of chair/planner throughout the year, though conversations can be wide-ranging. This year's convener is Larry Jordan.

Some recent and upcoming topics in Cracker Barrel are -

  • Techonological progress:  How much can/should we rely on it?
  • What makes for a good presidency?
  • Medicare model - a single-payer health plan on the installment plan?
