Green Sanctuary UCE has been certified by the UUA as a "Green Sanctuary." This means that UCE has worked to change its patterns of behavior toward the environment to honor the earth in all the ways currently available. We have changed habits, cleaning materials, lightbulbs, and recycling procedures. We are educating ourselves about protecting the environment and we are working to educate the community. The Green Sanctuary movement is a program of the UUA "Ministry of the Earth." We have covenanted to affirm our UU principle to "respect the interdependent web of all existence, of which we are a part," practicing a stewardship of the earth, its resources, and its living beings. Primary to our effort is helping the church community live a "greener life," reflecting greater responsibility for the safety of the environment. As part of gaining certification from the UUA as a "Green Sanctuary," we have surveyed ("audited") the church life and environs to identify areas in which we can improve our stewardship -- including practices of recycling, use of energy and energy-conserving products, and using environment-friendly products for all activities, including serving food and cleaning the church. Then we put into place policies and practices that allow us to fulfill our stewardship responsibilities to the best of our knowledge, changing those practices as research reveals more effective ways to maintain an environmentally sustainable church environment.
