READING GROUPSNon-fiction Reading Group: This relatively new group at UCE has gotten under its belt an astonishing range of reading: from UU John Buehrens' Understanding the Bible to Karen Armstrong's Battle for God, from Walt Whitman's Leaves of Grass to Annie Dillard's Pilgrim at Tinker Creek, from Victor Frankl's Man's Search for Meaning to Lawrence Boldt's The Tao of Abundance. The reading subjects range from religion to economics. The focus is on reading to deepen our understanding of the world and inform our relationship to it, sharpening our ability to articulate our values in the light of current issues. Fiction Reading Group: This is one of the longest-running groups at UCE. Their list of books read ranges from 18th and 19th century novels to contemporary writers. They read a book a month, selecting the books by consensus, a few months ahead of time. The Fiction Group meets at the church at 7:30 p.m. on third Fridays of each month except in summer when they meet once, usually for a potluck picnic. The Intergenerational Book Group meets approximately every other month from 6:30-8pm. Parents and children are welcome to attend but you don’t have to be a parent or a child to enjoy this group. We have discussed books such as Hatchet by Gary Paulsen, The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan, The Penderwicks by Jeanne Birdsall, City of Ember by Jeanne DuPrau and many more. Please look on the schedule or the bulletin boards at church to find out the date of our next meeting and the book we’ll be discussing or contact Eileen Wiviott at ewiviott@hotmail.com for more information.
