In October, 2010 the FBI raided the homes of 23  political and anti-war activists in Chicago and Minneapolis.  Come to a meeting Wed, May 30 at 7:30pm  at the church to hear  Sarah Smith, one of the peace activists served a subpoena by the FBI, and Newland Smith, a member of the Committee against Political Repression.  They will speak about the growing attacks on American civil liberties and what we can do about it.  The meeting is sponsored by the Peace & Justice Committee.

The Peace and Justice Program works for peace by advocating for systemic change.  We work to improve social and economic justice in our community and in the world at large.

We do much of our work through coalitions.  We are a member of the North Shore Coalition for Peace and Justice, which sponsors monthly peace vigils.  We’re also working with Evanston’s PeaceAble Cities to encourage interfaith dialog and with the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee (UUSC) in their efforts to end oppression and hunger worldwide.

In the past few years we’ve helped develop and promote the Unitarian-Universalist Association’s Peacemaking Statement of Conscience.  In January 2012, the Unitarian Church of Evanston qualified to be a Peace Advocate Congregation. Our work in International Peace, Personal and Congregational Peace, Peace Activism, and Military Personnel Support over the last three years has been outstanding. You can read about our work here.

The Peace and Justice Program meets the 2nd Sunday of every month after the worship service 11:45am – 1pm. For more information, contact Jane Bannor jbannor@sbcglobal.net or Gini Sayad virsayad@gmail.com
