Feb. 28, 2007 The Parish Minister’s Column The Rev. Barbara J. Pescan
Celebration Sunday was lovely — a huge thank you to all those who spoke beautifully, our Stewardship Co-chairs, Mark Ganchiff and Michael Anderson, Tom Hempfling and Martha Holman; those who set up the room, decorated the tables, brought food for the brunch, served and cleaned up afterward (including Julie, Lexa, Irene and Elena, who neatly boxed all the bright flower centerpieces); to the choir and all of you who expressed such joy and appreciation.
Where do we go from here? Coming up this spring are services that have grown from your input: one on the idea of ‘faith’ from the questions of the 6-month covenant group now meeting; one on ‘what’s fair’ from the promptings of Scott Campbell who bought the Serendipity Auction sermon; April Fool’s Sunday (stay tuned); “Drumbeat for Darfur,” March 25th, also UUSC Justice Sunday – the time for you to join the UU Service Committee (a $75 membership continues to be matched by the UU Congregation at Shelter Rock, New York); Easter; and music Sunday the next week. Evening services continue, the last Sunday of the month.
Linda LaPlante will bring the opportunity for each of us to become a Chalice Lighter — who are asked three times a year to send $10 or more to support a project in one of our Central Midwest District congregations selected by the committee. It’s a “barn raising by mail” — so a congregation can hire a part-time religious education director, field test an adult education curriculum or add an outreach effort to grow Unitarian Universalism.
The district Annual Spring Assembly is happening, too. (See the bulletin boards for registration information — what a good way to meet a lot of other UUs, learn new things, and have a good time.) This spring, too, Paul Mack and Associates will be conducting a feasibility study to consider how we go ahead with a capital campaign with a wide range of visionary possibilities.
The Rummage Sale is coming May 4th and 5th. And, the challenge I issued in ten envelopes in November is coming due the first Sunday in May. May 13th, Mothers’ Day, “The Love That Shapes Our Lives” returns — if you want to be one of the speakers who honor mothers and others whose love shapes us, let me know you are interested. Last but not least, May 20th is the day of our Annual Meeting, when I also reveal what the challenge was and what the ten envelope recipients did with their challenge.
There’s a place for you here this spring. If you’re a member, you could up your ante, show up to help in any one of the many activities going on; if you’re a friend or newcomer, you could attend the next Orientation to Membership sessions and take the leap to join UCE; if you’ve been considering joining a covenant group, you will have an opportunity to do that, too. Come on, join the fun and the faith!
See you here! Barbara
