May 30, 2007 The Parish Minister’s Column The Rev. Barbara J. Pescan
The UCE board has voted to re-connect with Interfaith Action of Evanston, and I have been communicating with Lois Carlson, IA’s President, about a couple of soup kitchens that could use our help. Lois writes:
Dear Barbara and Unitarian Church friends,
Our network serves meals every day of the week except Friday. On the other days the churches take full responsibility for staffing and serving the meals. Our long range goal is to get a Friday kitchen open, either at noon or in the evening.
The two IA kitchens that need the most support are our Monday noon (at Second Baptist Benson Avenue right next to the Evanston Athletic Club) and Sunday afternoon (at Hemenway Methodist on Chicago Ave at Main). There are still several dates open this year especially in the summer.
There's a possibility the Sunday afternoon kitchen may move back to St. Paul's in which case Hemenway may consider having us on Friday evening. It would be great to identify six different soup kitchen teams which would serve in rotation in a Friday kitchen. Perhaps the Unitarian Church can be part of that growing vision.
I have heard many people say that they wish UCE were more involved in serving the Evanston Community. This certainly is a way our members can get involved right away, without organizing something new, beginning by stepping in to an already going concern and helping out in a big way.
I go to General Assembly in a couple of weeks; in July I will be away for some R & R but, between now and July, Eileen Wiviott and I are trying to ascertain the interest/commitment level of UCE members to commit to Interfaith Action of Evanston to serve the community in this way. Contact me if you want to be part of this – bpescan@ucevanston.org, or 847-864-1330, extension 201. Thank you.
Think about it, will you? As the third and fourth grade students, parents have discovered providing meals when Beth Emet is celebrating the High Holy Days and Passover, making and serving food is a great way to nurture the human spirit for a world made whole.
