Blooms from the Breakdown

We celebrate our annual flower communion ceremony, created by Unitarian Minister Norbert Čapek in Prague in 1923. We carry on this sacred tradition to remember the beauty and strength of our pluralism and interdependence. Rev. Eileen leads this service with Worship Associate Janelle Brittain. We are blessed by our UCE Choir, under the direction of Vickie Hellyer and accompanied by Gregory Shifrin on piano. This is a worship service for all ages.

Today’s offering will be shared with the Black Lives of Unitarian Universalism (BLUU), which is committed to expanding the power and capacity of Black UUs within Unitarian Universalism.

Upcoming Services:

June 8 – Pride Service – Rainbow Alliance and Dr. Emma

June 15 – The Truth about Freedom – Rev. Eileen

June 22 – General Assembly service live streamed (10-11:30 am) – MASK Required

June 29 – Exploring AI (Pt. 1) – Dr. Emma

Update from Rev. Susan 5/25/25

Blessed Spring, My Friends!

I have been enjoying the bird migration, the blooming flowers, the amazing clouds, and our wonderful community this spring. The photo collage is of me on a walk at Clark Square (lower left), our Beltane Maypole viewed through the Flame sculpture on the UCE South Lawn (upper left), our Passover Seder dinner in the UCE Sanctuary (upper right), and the potluck table outside the kitchen after our Easter worship service (lower right).

The news about international wars and about the citizens and institutions of our democracy being undermined and attacked continues. If you are feeling overwhelmed (anew, again, or ongoing) by what is happening in our country or in your personal life, please do not hesitate to reach out to me, Rev. Eileen, or Rev. Elizabeth. You may also fill out the Request for Care form on our website to have someone reach out to you. We are here to support each other as we navigate what is happening in world events and in our private lives.

One way I am navigating these times is that each day, I purposely take time to practice gratitude or find beauty in my surroundings or connect with loved ones. I recently learned the wonderful term “framily.” Framily is a way to refer to a group of friends who are so close to you that you considered them family.

Another way that I am working to create the world I want to live in is by participating in the Beacon of Light gatherings once a week over the summer. The gatherings are a physical space to share messages of love, inclusion, solidarity, and hope.

This summer, members of numerous Evanston faith communities will be gathering at three different locations every Thursday evening. You are invited to show up at any one of the three locations: Dempster & Ridge; Chicago & Main; or Central & Central Park. The idea is for folks to be able to walk or bike to the location closest to their home. For those who will need to drive to one of these three locations, you are invited to think about how you might bring a Beacon of Light gathering closer to your home as the summer progresses. It only takes 3 people with signs to bring light to an entire neighborhood.

Please join me at the corner of Dempster & Ridge every Thursday, from 7:00-7:30pm, starting June 5 through August 28, as a beacon of light for our country’s future. Bring a sign with an inspirational message that reflects how you are dealing with the week’s events and your vision for the days ahead (sign inspiration here). On June 12th from 5:30-7:00 pm, you are invited to join our Racial Equity Action Leadership (REAL) Team in Room 3 for a sign making event. That Thursday, we will walk together over to Dempster & Ridge. If you can’t make that event and need a sign, please let me know. I have “Side With Love” and “Black Lives Matter” signs in my office.

It is my hope that we will have at least three folks from UCE standing with signs on the corner of Dempster & Ridge every Thursday through the summer. I will be there most Thursdays. If you are able to commit to a Thursday or two over the summer, please go into our UCE Beacon of Light signup and add yourself to one of the dates. Folks who volunteer through the signup schedule are committing to being one of the three core people for that Thursday. Everyone is invited to show up whether or not you add your name to the signup.

Taking care of ourselves is one way to support our continued resistance to unconstitutional actions, to encourage others to join in our efforts to preserve our democracy, and to have the energy to care for each other.

Yours in becoming a Beacon of Light,

Rev. Susan

Carved by Grief, Carried by Love

On this Memorial Day weekend, we gather not only to remember the ones we’ve lost, but to honor the grief that lives in us still. Too often, we’re asked to pretend we’re ok. Whether your heart carries sorrow from long ago or grief that is fresh and raw, this service invites you to bring it with you. Together, we’ll honor the ways grief reshapes us, and explore how it can deepen our compassion, widen our hearts, and carry us toward transformative healing.

Dr. Emma Farrell, ministerial intern, with Ann McCallister, Worship Associate, lead this service. Charles M. Anderson and Gregory Shifrin offer their musical talents.

Today’s offering will be shared with the Sunrise Movement. The Youth Group selected the Sunrise Movement as this month’s shared offering recipient because they are a group that is organized by youth and is working toward a world in which everyone has access to clear air and water, full pantries of food, affordable housing, free public transportation, good and meaningful jobs, vibrant community centers, and lives filled with joy.

In Joy and Gratitude

The church year has a similar cycle to the school year, and we are in the final month before summer kicks in. We continue to celebrate all that we’ve done before beginning the cycle over again.

Our Faith Formation Sunday on May 4 was a culmination of some of this. We welcomed 17 new members, heard a story by one of our youngest featuring a goblin, saw the development of a round of the game Telestrations, and heard our four senior high youth speak about the meaning of this community to them as they graduate and head off to their next phase in life. It was  full of wonderful music from the family choir and the regular choir, and a special Star Wars tribute on the violin by Enzo Wallin. Indeed, there is much to celebrate!

Last week, I wrote a Hats Off for all the volunteers in our faith formation program, and apparently I did a poor job of cutting and pasting before I sent it to be published. This resulted in my accidental deletion of Andy Donakowski from my kudos. My apologies to Andy – and to anyone else I might have deleted. Please know that your contributions are sincerely appreciated!

Our Young Adult group has really taken off this year, which has been wonderful to see. They began the year with a monthly gathering to play games and socialize, but it has expanded exponentially from there. They formed a communication avenue via the app, Discord, as a way to share joys, sorrows, memes, games, food, resources, and more. They also felt a need to meet more often, and have started Soulful Sunday, which is a time after Kinship Time to meet and have more meaningful conversation about the worship service. As if that isn’t enough, some of them have decided to start their own covenant group to do a deeper dive into our Soul Matters themes and other topics. Fair warning: they might approach you or a team or committee about ways to connect across the generations and be involved in the rest of the UCE community.

For our younger members, our summer program begins on June 15. We will be doing an art-based program this year that we’re calling Artsy-Fartsy Summer. Kiley Korey and Grey Wiviott are helping me build and lead this program, which is so exciting! They have so many great ideas, it’s been hard choosing which ones to do. If you love to express your creativity, or simply love to see the creativity of our kids, then feel free to join us!

The Family Ministry Team is planning their last gathering in early June and a beach day later this summer, so look for the details soon.

I will be travelling to the United Kingdom June 23-July 13 to celebrate my 40th wedding anniversary with my husband, Todd. This is our first experience travelling across the pond and we’re a little nervous but also excited. Wendy Drake will be stepping in for me on the Sundays I am gone, so please connect with her if you need anything.

Whether you’re travelling or not, have a wonderful start to your summer!

In Faith,

Kathy

Dreaming Who We Want to Be

Organizer adrienne maree brown says, “all organizing is science fiction – we are shaping the future we long for and have not yet experienced.” In our congregation, we are conspiring together to imagine and co-create the world we long to inhabit. What questions are we asking and how do we remain open to the answers in a more expansive, liberating, and life-giving way? Rev. Eileen with Worship Associate, Ellie Feddersen, lead this service. The UCE Choir and soloists, directed by Vickie Hellyer and accompanied by guest pianist, Ken Smith, offer their musical gifts.
