Visions of God
Tuesdays at 7-9 pm via Zoom
Facilitated by UCE members Bob Mesle and Dan Solomon.
This class aims to help people explore a range of important visions embracing or rejecting “God,” and to share personal journeys with each other. We hope class members will learn some new ideas, clarify familiar ones, make new connections, and enrich in their own thinking.
The question, “Do you believe in God?” is not productive unless we can get some clarity about what a person mean by “God.” But for us, the question certainly raises interwoven questions of both REALITY and VALUES. It asks about what exists and how the universe works. Talk of “God” also raises important questions about what values “God” stands for and what feelings are invoked. Geneticist and religious naturalist, Ursula Goodenough, notes that religion is about both “What is, and what matters.” –i.e., truth and ethics. Religions, including atheistic secularism, propose visions of reality coupled with claims about how we should treat each other given those beliefs. This class will explore how some concepts of “God” engage us in those reflections.

Christ for UU’s
Tuesdays, Nov. 10, 17; Dec. 1, 8, 15; 7:30-8:45 PM,
All sessions will be via Zoom.
Facilitated by UCE member Amy Pooley.
  • What can we as Unitarian Universalists learn from reading the New Testament?
  • Who was Jesus and why does he matter?
  • How can getting in touch with our Unitarian and our Universalist roots help us rethink the Christian message and even understand it in a new way?
Join us in discussing these questions and more on five Tuesdays in November and December. The course will be based on readings from the New Testament and the recent Beacon Press release “Christ for Unitarian Universalists.” We welcome you to purchase a copy of the book here to follow the course’s reading schedule, but the discussion will also be accessible for those who have not done the reading and would simply like to show up to share and listen.
Amy Pooley has been a UU for over a decade and a Christian for just a few years. She has a love for our faith’s Unitarian and Universalist roots. She is a graduate student in Counseling and she and her wife Ruth are the moms of a toddler.

“Virus vs Human: winners and losers in the interdependent web of all existence”
Discussion leader: Brenda Russell
Come discuss your role in the battle between the Covid—19 virus (Darwin, survival of the fittest) and humans (Genesis 1:28 “Be fruitful, and multiply”). This new virus has travelled rapidly around the world and infected millions of humans, so it’s a Darwinian success from the point of view of the virus. Humans have succeeded in rapid population growth in the last few centuries thanks to science for control of disease, another Darwinian success. Let’s discuss together the current and future challenges for making our world safe and sustainable in the pandemic era.

Life Planning Series Continues July 2020

Join us on Wednesdays in July (July 8, 15, 22, 29) from 7 to 8:30 pm.

July 8—Mental Health
Presenter: Judy LeFevour

This seminar will discuss the human costs of the Pandemic.  These costs can be far reaching and there are coping skills and resources to share that can help build resilience and manage these struggles.  Let’s help each other through this!

July 15—Ethical Wills/Spiritual Memories—Part I
Presenters: Rev. Eileen Wiviott and Rev. Karen Gustafson

This seminar will help us ferret out and tell the parts of our story that reflect what has been most precious and of most enduring value in our life to pass it on to the people you love most. Just as a legal will specifies what we want to happen with our material possessions, an ethical will puts in writing how we hope the concerns of our souls will be handled – our values, beliefs, stories and traditions we hope will endure. In these two sessions you will be invited to think about the spiritual matters you want to preserve, and to reflect, write and share responses to thought provoking questions.

July 22—Real Life Organizing
Presenter: Liz Kennedy-Eason

Organizing/decluttering is not a “one size fits all” process. Liz will lead us through examining the different types of clutter and accumulation. She will help us identify our individual style. She will guide us to create a fun, easy and practical way to declutter and organize our home and life through a process created by Cas Aarrssen and Peter Walsch.

July 29—Ethical Wills/Spiritual Memories—Part II

See description above from July 15.

VirtUUal RE: Summer 2020

Summertime is traditionally more laid-back in congregational life, as well as in other aspects of life. Enjoying the outdoors and nature becomes a necessity with the warmer weather. With this in mind, individuals and families are invited to our Summer Bucket List Challenge! You can find the Summer Bucket List here!

The family who completes the most items will win a chalice for the family and their picture in the newsletter! The contest ends on August 16, which gives you 10 weeks to do as many as you can. We will honor all participants at a virtual Dinner Church later this summer. Remember to share on social media what you and/or your family are/is doing with the hashtag #UCEBucketList so we can see your beautiful faces and efforts! If you’re shy about sharing on social media, then send me a quick email at kunderwood@ucevanston.org.

Family Fun on the Lawn!
It’s been too long since we’ve seen each other, so we’re gathering in small groups on the lawn to catch up and play contactless games. To keep within our guidelines, please RSVP on the signup below that fits the age group of your kid(s). If you have kids in more than one age group, pick the one that fits your schedule better then. An email will go out a few days prior to each gathering with further info. See you then!
Pre/K – Sign up here!
2nd-5th – Sign up here!
6th-8th – Sign up here!
High School – see below

Soulful Home: Compassion – Tons of Activities, stories, music, and more to explore on our theme this summer! Click here for ways to connect as a family to our faith!
High School Youth

For Adults
The Science of Well-Being – continues at 7 pm Tuesday evenings for those enrolled.

Parent and Family Resources
Check out this living document for resources on anti-racism. Feel free to add new ones that you find! Together, we can nurture the next generations and create an anti-racist society.

Want to take your leadership skills to the next level with a team of other UCE members?
We have our first registrant for the MidWest Leadership School (MWLS) for 2020! Our region is planning an excellent curriculum and is packaging it into an online opportunity spread over 4 Saturdays starting this fall. They suggest we put together a team of attendees to enhance and strengthen the lessons learned. The training is useful for those who want to become more skilled at leadership roles in the congregation or in the community. The cost may be covered entirely by a grant from the Endowment committee. There is only an adult school this year (18 and over). Check out more details here.

Contact Kathy Underwood or Shirley Adams if you want to know more about how this opportunity might work for you this year.

VirtUUal RE: June 7, 2020

Welcome to a new month and our new theme of compassion! With all that is going on in our country right now, it seems very appropriate to reflect on and explore this theme.

We traditionally have a “one-room schoolhouse” approach for RE during the summer. Since we can’t meet in person, the Children and Youth Program Team and I are sending out a Summer Bucket List program that families can do at their own pace over the summer. In addition to this, we will have some occasional family game nights too. Look for updates in my weekly UCE Family Email, which will also include other resources, links, and ideas.

Click here for the Summer Bucket List.

High school youth can connect Sunday evening at 7 pm on Zoom. Look for an email from the advisors later in the week with info on how to join.

Rev. Eileen and I would love to see your beacon of light in our worship services! We’re looking for families to light the chalice for virtual worship. How will this work, you ask? She will arrange to meet you at UCE, and video-record your family lighting the chalice and/or saying our covenant together. Social distancing protocols will be maintained too. If you’d like to participate, email Kathy at kunderwood@ucevanston.org or Eileen at ewiviott@ucevanston.org.

Beginning June 16, adults and families with teens are invited to a new program this summer: The Science of Well-Being. This program comes from Yale University, and it’s free!  In this 10-week course (you need not attend all, but it is highly recommended), you will engage in a series of challenges designed to increase your own happiness and build more productive habits. As preparation for these tasks, Professor Laurie Santos reveals misconceptions about happiness, annoying features of the mind that lead us to think the way we do, and the research that can help us change. You will ultimately be prepared to successfully incorporate a specific wellness activity into your life.

We invite you to watch the online sessions at your convenience, and then join us Tuesday evenings at 7-8 pm on Zoom to share what we’ve learned. The online sessions usually involve short videos, plus exercises you do on your own, for a total of no more than 2 1/2 hours weekly.

For more details, and to sign up for the video series, click here.

To join our discussions, email Kathy Underwood at kunderwood@ucevanston.org by Saturday, June 13.

In Faith,

Kathy

VirtUUal RE: May 31, 2020

With the end of May coming up, we are finishing our monthly theme of Thresholds this week. Many of you have completed e-learning and have crossed the threshold into summertime and freedom from schoolwork. And some of you have crossed the threshold of graduation, whether it be from one grade to another, from high school or from college. And we are collectively beginning to cross the threshold from social distancing and isolation to being able to see family and friends and eventually gather for worship.

Our metaphor this week in VirtUUal RE is the door of imagination. You can find the VirtUUal RE session on the homepage. Your family can do this together at your own convenience any time during the week. You can read the session here or watch the video here.

For middle school youth, take a virtual tour of the Baha’i Temple in Wilmette here in this “Summit” Sunday session. The building’s architect, Louis Bourgeois, was a French Canadian who joined the Bahá’í faith more than a decade before working on the temple. Bourgeois felt the design of the temple needed to reflect the Bahá’í belief of oneness for humanity, as well as the unity of all religions. In describing his design, he said, “There are combinations of mathematical lines, symbolizing those of the universe, and in their intricate merging of circle into circle, and circle within circle, we visualize the merging of all religions into one.” If architecture interests you, then read more here.

High school youth can connect Sunday evening at 7 pm on Zoom. Look for an email from the advisors later in the week with info on how to join.

Of course, we also have our virtual worship service on Sunday mornings at 11:15 am. I continue to post ideas on the UCE Children and Youth Facebook page, along with some interactive things to share, so look for that as well.

We traditionally have a short break in RE between the church year and the start of the summer program. The Children and Youth Team is planning things now, so look for more info next week in the newsletter and on the website.

The Non-Fiction Book Group will meet Sunday to discuss Charged: The New Movement to Transform American Prosecution and End Mass Incarceration by Emily Bazelon. More information is in this week’s newsletter.

In Faith,

Kathy

VirtUUal RE: May 24, 2020

It is hard to believe that Memorial Day weekend is here already. For those who have served our country, whether in the military or otherwise, I am grateful for your service and the freedoms it brings. Yes, there is still inequality here and yet collectively, we are better off than many around the world. My white, middle class privilege allows for more than most people. I struggle with gaining the courage to do what I can and then some, and to do it more often.

Our metaphor this week in VirtUUal RE is a door of courage. We explore the symbol of our US flag this Memorial Day weekend, and what that means to us. You can find the VirtUUal RE session on the homepage of UCE’s website, www.ucevanston.org. Your family can do this together at your own convenience any time during the week. You can read the session here or watch the video here.

The Children and Youth Program Team and I are exploring ideas for this summer. How would your family like to connect with UCE friends this summer? What fun ways have you been connecting with family and friends that we could use at UCE? Send me your ideas at kunderwood@ucevanston.org.

For middle school youth, learn more about the Baha’I faith here in this Tack Sunday session.

This week we explore the theme of Thresholds using the metaphor a door to shelter. This week’s VirtUUal RE session on the homepage. Your family can do this together at your own convenience any time during the week. You can read the session here or watch the video here.
I’d love to hear from you about how your family would like to connect with UCE friends this summer and see what ideas they offer. Encourage creativity and think outside the box! Shoot me an email at kunderwood@ucevanston.org and let me know what comes up in your brainstorming.
Did you see Rev. Eileen’s storytelling video? Watch it here. If you would like to record yourself reading or telling a story that would be shared on our Facebook page and in our newsletter, let Kathy know. It would be wonderful to have a whole collection!
For middle school youth, learn about the Baha’I faith here.
High school youth can join a special youth Worship Without Walls Friday evening by registering here. And you can connect Sunday evening at 7 pm on Zoom. Look for an email from the advisors later in the week with info on how to join.
