Reconstruction History Series with REAL: April 7-28, 2021

According to PBS, “The twelve years that composed the post-war Reconstruction era (1865-77) witnessed a seismic shift in the meaning and makeup of our democracy, with millions of former slaves and free black people seeking out their rightful place as equal citizens under the law. Though tragically short-lived, this bold democratic experiment was, in the words of W. E. B. Du Bois, a ‘brief moment in the sun’ for African Americans, when they could advance, and achieve, education, exercise their right to vote, and run for and win public office.”

Please join the REAL History team in watching and discussing the 4-part PBS Series “Reconstruction: America After the Civil War” and then discussing each episode.  WTTW (or other PBS station) members can stream each episode, or you can watch them on DVD, then join us for a discussion on Zoom at 8:00 on Wednesdays April 7, 14, 21, and 28.  Or you can join at 7:00 to watch the episode on Zoom and stay on for the discussion.  DVDs are available at local public libraries, or you can arrange to borrow one of the 2 UCE copies by contacting Dana Deane. You do not have to attend all sessions to participate, but it is encouraged.

BLUU Havens Chicago February Gathering: February 20, 2021

SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 20TH 1:00-2:30 on Zoom

We welcome you to join us for our February Black Lives of Unitarian Universalism  BLUU Havens Chicago Gathering.

Our theme will be Self Care & Self Love. You may take care of others, but do you show yourself the same consideration? If so, how do you take care of yourself? When did you last treat yourself kindly? You may shower others with love but how do you demonstrate love of self? Also, we will entertain your ideas for themes for future gatherings and you don’t want to miss our Closing Dance Party!

This will be a Black Only Sacred Space.

To request a zoom link please email:  BLUUHavenChicago@gmail.com

What is BLUU Havens?

“Everybody wants a place to call home. What many Black UUs have clearly articulated a need for is a Black Unitarian Universalism that offers an unequivocal and unwavering sense of home to Black people who feel held by, or want to be more connected to, Black ancestry, Black love, Black thought, Black artistry, and Black faith. What we want is a Unitarian Universalism that, at EVERY turn, honors, uplifts, and equips our Black Lives. So the development of BLUU Havens  & BLUU Harbors came alive!

And after quite some time of deep listening, dreaming, discerning, and developing, Black Lives of UU is thrilled to have launched the process for social groups and spiritual communities of predominantly Black UU and Black UU-adjacent folks (folks who share our values of Love, Liberation & Justice) to become established as BLUU Havens or BLUU Harbors!!!”-BLUU

February 14, 2021

We will host an online worship service on Sunday, February 14th at 11:15 am.

A Fine Time to Say I Love You – Rev. Karen Gustafson
The cultural phenomenon that is Valentine’s day has long presented both ardent and reluctant lovers a contrived opportunity to express love. It has become for all too many a watershed of variously met and unmet expectations. A special day to say “I love you”? Really, just one? Let us take some time to open our hearts and minds to the rest of the times and ways to express and receive love on the other 364 days of the year. Along with your chalice, bring a scrap of paper and a writing tool. There will be homework…

Please submit your Joys and Sorrows through this online form. If you submit a message by 11 am, we will try to read it that Sunday. Thank you for your patience as we are adapting to best serve you all! Note there will only be one service time during the summer so that we can gather together as a whole community of faith. You can still give to the shared offering through “text to give,” mail a check to the office with “shared offering” in the memo line, or go to our website and hit “give” on the upper right or click here. This Sunday’s shared offering recipient is Interfaith Action of Evanston.

Intersectionality in Speculative Fiction: May 2021

Intersectionality in speculative fiction: N. K. JemisinThe Fifth Season
Tuesdays, May 4, 11, 18 at 7-8:30 pm | All sessions will be via Zoom | Facilitated by UCE member Emily Eckwahl-Sanna

So here is why I write what I do: We all have futures. We all have pasts. We all have stories. And we all, every single one of us, no matter who we are and no matter whats been taken from us or what poison weve internalized or how hard weve had to work to expel itwe all get to dream.” —N. K. Jemisin

Imagine a world where apocalypses are commonplace. Where frequent seismic activitywhether volcanoes, earthquakes, or other environmental disastersresult in extended winters and the widespread loss of human life. In this world, where nature is seen as a force to be feared rather than revered and where human survival is always tenuous at best, society and law are ordered around strict caste systems, and orogenespeople with the magical power to affect and control the earthare feared and subdued.

This is the world of N. K. Jemisins Broken Earth trilogythe only science fiction trilogy to win the Hugo Award in consecutive years for all three novels and the first time a Black writer has won a Hugo for a novel. Written while Jemisin was attending a NASA-funded workshop on science and media, the first book in the trilogy, The Fifth Season, tells the story of three orogene women of different castes, ages, and time periods who are seeking to survive in the midst of apocalypse.

In this three-week series, we will discuss how Kimberlé Crenshaws definition of intersectionalityor how race, class, gender, sexuality, and other identities interconnect and overlapshows up in the The Fifth Season. Other topics to address include the role of science in interpreting science fiction and the role of speculative fiction in creating the Beloved Community.

Beloved Conversations Spring Registration Open: Feb 2021

Beloved Conversations Virtual Spring Registration Opens February 1-26th!

Beloved Conversations—a faith formation anti-racism program through our Unitarian Universalist seminary in Chicago, Meadville Lombard Theological School—went virtual last fall and over 1,200 learners joined the first ‘Within’ phase, including 23 participants from UCE! We would love to have you join us for spring! This program is an experience of connection and spiritual development that you don’t want to miss.

The Spring Term registration opens February 1st and closes on February 26th. The Spring Term begins March 16th, with lessons published every two weeks, as well as biweekly small group check-ins and monthly large group worship and discussion. In the program’s current phase, ‘Within,’ we engage with a personal exploration of race and our work for racial justice. With two caucuses, our white participants are invited into the Un/learning for Liberation course and our BIPOC+ participants are invited into the Gathering Ourselves course. In Beloved Conversations, we are here to heal the impact of racism on our lives. Let’s get free together. Learn more at meadville.edu/beloved

Scholarships are available. Please click here to apply.

From EOD: February 5, 2021

Post-holiday break brings a flurry of activity for staff as we continue our virtual services and work from our home offices to keep programs moving forward.

Special Notice: Budget Town Hall Meeting – Wednesday February 10 at 7 p.m.  and Sunday, February 14, after the service at 12:30. Click here to join the Wednesday Budget Town Hall. The link for Sunday will be shared in next week’s newsletter.

The Budget Working Group (Treasurer Susan Comstock, Rev. Eileen Wiviott, ISC Member-at-Large Rob Wingader, Board Vice President Joe Romeo, and I have met over the past many weeks to assemble the 2021-22 Budget. The preliminary budget was approved at the January ISC meeting and the January Board meeting. As the pledge drive results come in we will continue to meet and revise the budget as necessary to prepare for a vote at the Virtual Annual Meeting in May 2021.

Pledge Drive 2021-2022 – The pledge drive team is gearing up for our 2021-22 Fiscal Year Pledge Drive. A kickoff will be held at worship on February 28th, our first digital pledge drive due to COVID 19. Look for details in upcoming newsletters.

REALM Directory and Registration – The UCE directory is now only on Realm. If you have not set up your Realm account, please do so asap. If you need a new email invite, please email admin@ucevanston.org. You will not be included in the directory until you set up your login. If you cannot find someone in the directory, use the search function. Please note the search function is not perfect and requires some patience. Here are some helpful tips:

  • Realm will only recognize exact spelling of names: e.g. if someone is David in Realm and you search Dave, David will not show up.
  • You can search using the first few letters of someone’s first or last name: e.g. you can type in “Dav” and  both David’s and Dave’s will show up.
  • Once you type in a name or the first few letters, a drop down with names will appear. You can click on the name if you see it, or click “More Results.” This will bring you to a list of everyone in Realm that has those letters in their name.
  • Do not type in a name and press enter. This is not intuitive, but this may pull up a random name that is close, but not who you are looking for.
  • If you are having trouble finding someone, feel free to email the office at admin@ucevanston.org and Jessica Meis can supply the contact info you are looking for.

Rentals – I am pleased to report that I am getting rental inquiries for the summer and fall. I am working on a contract with a bike camp for the parking lot area. COVID guidelines will be adhered to, of course. Weavers Guild of the North Shore is planning small group meetings that will include live streaming. We are finding new ways to cross the bridge from full COVID closure to the possibility of larger gatherings next fall. This will help us greatly as rental income loss has hit our budget this fiscal year.

Capital Campaign – projects continue as we are about to launch the Intergenerational Playscape and Ramp slated to begin construction in April. In the days ahead Faith Formation task force members and parents will meet with Indira Johnson, artist, and Britta Francke of Nature’s Perspective to see these exciting plans and have an opportunity to give feedback and ask questions. The ramp and garden space will offer space for families and congregants of all ages to gather outside. There will be benches, tables with chairs, a labyrinth, hopscotch, pathways, a water fountain, areas of play with natural materials, and more. We have taken great care to ensure accessibility and inclusion for all.

The Sanctuary Cooling Team continues to meet by zoom weekly. We have received four responses to our Request for Proposal (RFP). The team is now evaluating the information, submitting our questions and will meet with each contractor. Greg Grabowski, Andy Schlickman (Green Team), Michael Drennan (Green Team), and I have spent several months carefully evaluating the best system for UCE cooling. We are addressing not only costs, but feasibility and environmental questions.

Lobby and Wing refurbishment projects continue. Selecting furnishings during COVID-19 restrictions is a challenge. Johna VanDyke has ordered new carpeting for the ramp and sanctuary platform. We proceed with plans as discussed at our lobby focus group meeting which addressed flow, layout, installation of a lighted cabinet for history items and storage below, as well as movable kiosks for computers to aid with check in, attendance and visitor information. Room 2 will get new furniture. Lighting in the lobby in the area over the current seating area has been upgraded, as well as in the area outside the bathrooms. New lighting is being installed in Room 2 in the next two weeks. We opted for a more intimate, ambient system in that room since it is used for small group meetings, covenant groups and small memorials.

Upcoming projects for the fall and beyond include an inclusive and accessible washroom in the lower level, security cameras on each level of the church, a hearing loop, a funds to be set up in a Building Fund account for emergencies over the next several years.

Our grounds – We look forward to the spring when planting continues on the west lawn. Barbara Butz and a team of members and friends will install a pollinator garden in the large open oval space you see just east of the bike racks.  You will see changes along the west side of the wing as new plantings will be installed to replace the old and dying bushes.

Just imagine summer 2021 – a new garden area, playscape and ramp on the east lawn, a pollinator garden with butterflies on the west lawn and new plantings on the west side of the wing, as well as our new parking lot. One day we will all walk that path from Greenwood to our entrance and gather together once again. I am looking forward to that day.

Please let me know if you have questions about finance, buildings and grounds, or capital campaignMy email is srobinson@ucevanston.org.

Clothing Drive for Connections: February 20-27, 2021

As part of our partnership with Connections for the Homeless we are holding a clothing drive for the clothing cupboard. Since we can’t do “Our Giving House” because we aren’t at church, we thought this offering might be a good option. We need very specific items in sizes medium, large, and extra large; there is always a demand for large sizes.  Please do not give us any other items other than those listed above. Items can be for men and women.

  • Adult Winter Hats, Scarves, Gloves
  • Adult Men’s Shirts
  • Adult Winter Coats XL & Larger
  • Adult Underwear & Socks
  • Backpacks

All items must be new or gently used. If used, they must be washed. Recently Sheila Holder was able to get several nice coats for Connections from the Salvation Army. She washed them and they look like new.

If you don’t want to donate, you can make a contribution and we can buy items to fill out the offering of clothing.

Drop off dates for church are Saturday, February 20 and 27 from 1 to 3 pm at the main door. We will meet you at church and take your donations. You can also drop off at Carol Nielsen’s house, Maggie Weiss’ house or Sheila Holder’s Condo. Use the church directory for addresses. Questions: Email Carol Nielsen (carolnielsen2100@gmail.com)
