Sunday Service: In-person and Online Sunday at 10:30am

October 24, 2021

We will host an in-person and virtual worship service on Sunday, October 24th at 10:15 am.

The Risk of Reconciliation
Reasons for avoiding possible conflict abound. Many of us would rather bear the frustration or pain or even indignity of hurt feelings or misunderstanding or even broken covenant rather than risking the possibility of unpleasantness or rejection or further wounding on either part. When this is a pattern, we get good at cutting our losses and moving away. Harder to get good at is the practice of seeking reconciliation. Beyond avoiding the risk of further conflict what positive outcomes are we risking as well?

A few important notes about participating in-person:

  1. Everyone over 2 in and around the UCE building will need to be masked.
  2. We will maintain physical distance, which means, chairs will be spaced apart and seating is limited in the sanctuary to 120. We will have overflow seating in room 3 (25) and room 6 (20), to participate in the service through the livestream. Beyond this, there will be seating outside the sanctuary on the south lawn.
  3. Please review our UCE Guidelines for Building Use before Sunday.

Please submit your Joys and Sorrows through this online form. If you submit a message by 9 am, we will try to read it that Sunday. Thank you for your patience as we are adapting to best serve you all! Note there will only be one service time so that we can gather together as a whole community of faith. You can still give to the shared offering through “text to give,” mail a check to the office with “shared offering” in the memo line, or go to our website and hit “give” on the upper right or click here. This Sunday’s shared offering recipient is NAACP Evanston North Shore Branch.

Toward These Ends
Our Ends articulate where we are going together, why we are here, and what we are trying to achieve as a Beloved Community. They create a shared understanding of our common values and how we want to orient ourselves toward living our mission. Even if we are far from arriving at our destination, we commit to the journey and begin again in Love. This service will be led by Rev. Eileen Wiviott with Worship Associate Carla Williams.

The Blessing of the Animals
Animals bless our lives in many ways, whether we keep them as pets or enjoy watching them scamper or fly past our windows, we are connected to and benefit from the contributions of animals. In this annual tradition, we honor and express gratitude for the life-giving diversity of animal life. Send in your photos of animal friends (past and present) with the names of you and your animals to ewiviott@ucevanston.org by Wednesday, the 29th. Rev. We will host an in-person and virtual worship service on Sunday, September 26th at 10:15 am.

The Possibility of Connection is Everywhere
We’re living in a multiplatform pandemic world with some of us in-person and some of us virtual for worship services, family gatherings, work meetings, and more. We are having to maneuver the circumstances under which we visit with family, friends, and colleagues. It can be exhausting. This week you are invited to take a pause from all the planning and think about each of these moments, in-person or virtual, as a moment of connection. You are invited to think of connection as love. How might we pause to recognize the love expressed through our connections with each other whether it is in-person, online, or a combination of both? How might we pause to really connect with that which is larger than ourselves: with nature, with community, with the divine?

A few important notes about participating in-person:

  1. Everyone over 2 in and around the UCE building will need to be masked.
  2. We will maintain physical distance, which means, chairs will be spaced apart and seating is limited in the sanctuary to 120. Mistakes, I’ve Made a Few
We know that we all make mistakes because no one is perfect. But making them, owning them, and repairing the harm is difficult for all of us. It may bethe shame that gets in the way. What does accountability look like in a covenantal community? How do we embrace a culture of loving ourselves and each other through the inevitable mistakes we make and how do we learn from them well? This sermon was purchased by Ellie Feddersen at last year’s Serendipity Auction. Rev. Eileen Wiviott preaching.

A few important notes about participating in-person:

  1. Everyone over 2 in and around the UCE building will need to be masked.

We will gather our blessings and share our hopes in our first truly multi-platform worship service. To Work with Love
God cursed humanity with labor, to toil in working the land. Certainly the powerful and wealthy few have used this message to control the means of production, dehumanizing workers. The Labor Movement has tried to empower workers to collectively assert their right to worked without being worked to death. Where are we now? What does it mean to work with love – for ourselves, each other, and the earth?
