Sunday Service: In-person and Online Sunday at 10:30am

January 17, 2021

We will host an online worship service on Sunday, January 17th at 11:15 am.

The Radical Imagination of Martin Luther King, Jr. – Rev. Eileen Wiviott

The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. laid out a vision of the ‘KIN’-dom of heaven: a world where people are judged by the content of their character, rather than the color of their skin and children of all races play joyfully and freely together. White liberal America readily embraces this vision, but what about King’s more ‘radical’ message of egalitarian justice, economic equity, and collective liberation? What is our responsibility as progressive people of faith to further King’s dream of revolutionary love and to promote the ethical and moral imperatives he lived and died for?

Please submit your Joys and Sorrows through this online form. If you submit a message by 11 am, we will try to read it that Sunday. Thank you for your patience as we are adapting to best serve you all! Note there will only be one service time during the summer so that we can gather together as a whole community of faith. You can still give to the shared offering through “text to give,” mail a check to the office with “shared offering” in the memo line, or go to our website and hit “give” on the upper right or click here. This Sunday’s shared offering recipient is Community Renewal Society (CRS).

To Begin a New Story: Imagining a Shared Ministry – Rev. Karen Gustafson, Interim Minister
The Interim between settled ministers is, by design, a time for a congregation to look at itself and to claim the strengths and to address challenges that have shaped its history. One of the presenting challenges at the start of the current Interim was the story of complicated relationships between UCE and your past ministers. To fully express the potential of this amazing congregation, UCE is being invited to embrace a new story about the nature of ministry and the nature and role of your new settled Senior Minister.

The Great Turning
It is the turning of the year and possibility emerges out of the ashes of this extraordinary time. As a community of faith, we reaffirm our commitment to play our part in making the world whole and fully participate in the work that reconnects us to our mission.  We spiral inward with gratitude and grief and then out again with new vision and determination. Joanna Macy is an eco-philosopher and teacher of creative responses to planetary crisis. In this service we will explore the lessons of her work through the book she co-authored with Molly Brown titled, Coming Back to Life. Rev. Eileen leads this service.

“Look for a Lovely Thing: Celebrating Stillness and Light”

Stars over snow,
And in the west a planet
Swinging below a star—
Look for a lovely thing and you will find it,
It is not far—
It never will be far.

“Night” by Sara Teasdale

The 7 candles of Chalica,
the 9 candles of the Hanukkah Menorah,
the 7 candles of Kwanzaa,
and a prominent star in the night sky . . .
Lights figure prominently in our December Holiday Season
As do moments of stillness and beauty!

UCE Choristers and Soloists, Gregory, and our guest clarinetist, Rob Nordli, will be sharing music and readings that celebrate the lights, stillness, mystery, and joy of this December Holiday Season.

“Still Waiting” – Karen Gustafson
As affiliates of a faith tradition that holds its Christian roots lightly, Unitarian Universalist often shine the light of reason upon the traditions of our forebears and find new meaning.

Advent,” Wikipedia tells us, “is a season of the liturgical year observed in most Christian denominations as a time of expectant waiting and preparation for both the celebration of the Nativity of Christ at Christmas and the return of Christ at the Second Coming.”

Regardless of your views on the theology and history of Christmas, there is much we might consider about the value and meaning of expectant waiting. This year there is much that holds us in wait. “Stillness” is our monthly theme. How might this time of waiting be informed by stillness?

“It Takes Practice” – Matt Meyer
Our favorite songs, whoever the artist or whatever the style, were created in a strange alchemy of study and inspiration, of strict practice and of letting go. Spiritual Practice is a similar combination of dedication, muscle memory, and perhaps a little divine inspiration. Join us for a musical exploration of learning to risk, building the muscle memory of courage, and the spiritual practice of relationship when things around us are changing fast.

Matt Meyer is a lifelong Unitarian Universalist with a long background as a musician and worship leader for UU congregations. Matt lives in Boston but travels as an itinerant worship leader, bringing the good news of Unitarian Universalism to hundreds congregations all over the country. He serves as the Director of Operations for Sanctuary Boston, a contemporary UU worship community that meets on Wednesday nights. Matt is also a founding organizer of the UU Songleaders Convergence, a gathering for all UUs who love community singing to share skills, best practices, and songs, in order to build a more musical movement together. You can follow Matt and get his email updates on Music and Worship here.

“Breaking Bread Together”
Bread communion is one of four traditional communion services celebrated at UCE (water, bread, fire, flower). In years past, on the Sunday before Thanksgiving, we’d bring our bread or other gluten free treats forward to a common table, where they’d be sliced and shared. There are bountiful metaphors around bread and what it means to break bread together. Together we will create a new kind of communion, sharing our stories and rituals of gathering abundance and nourishing transformation.

Hope, Expectation and Disappointment on the Road to Beloved Community” – Rev. Karen Gustafson
“There can be no deep
disappointment  where there is not deep love.” – Martin Luther King, Jr.

Disappointment is a normal part of every day. Things just dont always live up to our hopes or expectations. We are, nonetheless, drawn forth by longing and hope for a closer approximation of how we think life should be and what it would take to make it that way. How do our differing ways of managing our expectations and disappointments shape the various cultures we live in – our families, our social connections, our work environments or even the past and future of UCE? What do our Unitarian Universalist covenants teach us about the path forward from disappointment in our progress toward beloved community?
