Sunday Service: In-person and Online Sunday at 10:30am

April 12, 2020

We will host an online worship service on Sunday, April 12th at 11:15 am.

Liberating Joy” – Rev. Eileen Wiviott

This Easter Sunday was planned as a music service celebrating the Sunrise Massby composer Ola Gjeilo. Though we cannot be together in our sacred space to hear our full choir with accompaniment, we will, nevertheless, celebrate music and joy, knowing that the storm will Passover and the sun will surely rise again. In our confinement and physical separation, the need for creative, compassionate connection and our hunger for beauty unifies us. Together, we reach toward liberation for everyone and to the hope of a world made new. Worship Leaders: Acting Senior Minister, Rev. Eileen Wiviott; Music Director, Vickie Hellyer; Director of Lifespan Religious Education, Kathy Underwood; and Pianist, Gregory Shifrin.

Note the 9:30 and 11:15 services are being rolled into one service time so that we can gather together as a whole community of faith. You can still give to the shared offering through “text to give,” mail a check to the office with shared offering in the memo line, or go to our website and hit “give” on the upper right or click here. This Sunday’s shared offering recipient is Faith in place (click here to learn more).

A truth so real it has lasted centuries” – Rev. Karen Mooney
In this time of ambiguity and anxiety what do we put our faith in? How do we hold onto hope for ourselves and others? Is there a message in the Palm Sunday story that holds some truth about how to live in these times? Let us explore together where we are and how the ancient stories hold open hope for this time.

We invite you to send us your concerns and gratitudes by 11:00 a.m. that morning to be read aloud by the ministers. Please submit them by clicking here. “BFG – Big Friendly Giant or Belief, Faith, and God: the power and limitation of religious language” – Rev. Eileen Wiviott

Words matter and language has power. Coming out of the Protestant tradition, Unitarian Universalism retains much of the ritual, structure, words and hymnody of that tradition, even as we draw from diverse sources of wisdom and expand our inclusive pluralism. As we challenge ourselves to claim a progressive religious voice in the world, speaking for justice, peace, equity and compassion, it is important to use words mindfully. To that end, we need not abdicate the power of religious language. Instead, we can explore, redefine, and reclaim the meaning of words like worship, prayer, faith, belief, and even god. Rev. Eileen leads worship with Martha Holman serving as our Worship Associate.

“Investing In Each Other” – Rev. Eileen Wiviott

When we speak of generosity, we often think about how we give of our money and, without a doubt, money has a powerful impact that can be used beneficently or cruelly. There is also tremendous power in the time and talent we choose to share. It takes real intention to invest our time, talent, and treasure wisely. We’ll practice together investing in one another and placing value on our connections.

“Resilient in Principle and Practice”  – Rev. Karen Gustafson

The 2020 election cycle is heating up and with it the inevitable invitation to  demeaning, negative and deplorable  public rhetoric. As Unitarian Universalists who claim a set of Principles and Sources that call us “to confront power and structures of evil with the transforming power of love”, this rhetoric challenges us at our very core. How can we remain resilient and practice our faith in the face of these challenges? What is the story of this time that reflects best upon our living tradition?

“The Beauty and Truth of Evolution” – Rev. Eileen Wiviott

Evolution is an adaptive response to what is, not necessarily what should be. If evolution is an amoral force, that is to say neither good nor bad, can we evolve and adapt to life in an ethical way? Adapting to new realities as co-creators of a world made whole. A service in honor of the life of Charles Darwin. Singer/Songwriter Kristin Lems is our musical guest.

Video will be available as soon as possible.
