Is There Any Good News?

Headlines pummel us daily with bad news, and television news sources offer “Breaking News” around the clock with the fear that the end is surely near.  Does Unitarian Universalism give us anything to hold on to in troubled times?  We’ll find out by examining the core of our liberal faith and the Unitarian Universalist movement that arises out if it.  I believe that what distinguishes our congregation from others makes us a destination for those who desire a fresh movement of the spirit, unencumbered by dogma and encouraged by debate.  But how will they find us if we don’t articulate our faith?  This is a good day to begin again. Downstairs start for Religious Education at 11 am. Service led by Rev. Gregory Stewart

 UCE Through the Decades

We celebrate the heritage of UCE by hearing from members of UCE about the decade they joined the congregation.  We begin in the 1960s and end with the 2010s.  Please come and hear about these journeys of faith, hope and justice through the decades. Service led by Rev. Gregory Stewart and Rev. Eileen Wiviott.  All Ages Worship at 9:15. Religious Education class begin downstairs.

Trusting In Imagination

Our youth will be contemplating imagination and asking us to wonder with them, “imagine if . . .” Both the 9:15 and 11:00 services will be intergenerational and youth-led — come see what our youth have imagined into being for worship!

Charles Darwin’s Religion: “Losing Faith Religiously”

When the light goes on, when the page is turned, when our eyes are truly opened, is it possible to still believe?  It is an old question, one asked by humanity’s mythic “first family,” Adam and Eve, and relevant for us today.  My own mentor in this query is Charles Darwin, who was both unable to believe in God and unable to admit to atheism.  Where did that leave him, and where does it leave us today?  All Ages Worship at 9:15 am. Downstairs start for Religious Education at 11 am. Service led by Rev. Gregory Stewart

The Only Thing We Have to Fear

I hear from so any people about how fearful they’ve become in light of all the changes taking place in our country and in the world. The rise of an unhealthy nationalism can make some of us clam up or give in. So let’s be sure that we fear the right things, and then let’s explore spiritual resources to help us deal with that fear, personally and congregationally. As Marianne Williamson reminds us, “Our deepest fear is not that we’re inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.” Is this true? All Ages Worship at 9:15 am. Downstairs start for Religious Education at 11 am. Service led by Rev. Gregory Stewart

From Impossible to Improbable – finding possibility in the impossible

The improbability of a planet such as ours hosting such a rich diversity of life, let alone human intelligence, is astounding. Reflecting on this improbability, we explore what else may be possible. All Ages Worship at 9:15. 11am Religious Education classes begin downstairs. Service led by Rev. Eileen Wiviott

King of Kings

Why does Mike King have a holiday? We know him better as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., who, prior to his becoming one of the greatest civil rights leaders of all times, was a pastor. What did his congregants think of him?  The role of pastor may be one of the most overlooked sides of Martin Luther King Jr. but it was one of the most important aspects of who he was.  Today we’ll consider the Preacher King. Service led by Rev. Gregory Stewart. All Ages service (sanctuary)

Liberal for Life

If you were arrested for being a religious liberal, would there be enough evidence to convict you? This sermon understands Unitarian Universalism as a countercultural lifestyle, not a Sunday morning choice. Given that the Unitarian Church of Evanston is a religiously liberal oasis in a changing political landscape, how shall we then live? Service Led by Rev. Gregory Stewart.
